This fall has been unusually good in my quest of rare Ambassadeur reels. Shown below is the Champaign 5000D that was sent to me by a California fisherman. This is a rare model of the direct drive model. In November, a Mint brown 6500 boxed was secured from a collector at the NFLCC meet in Kelso, Wa.

After 10 years of collecting, I have listed all my reels for sale. One sold for $3000+ so hobbie has been worth while. Now, I find myself again buying when the opportunity presents itself. Most recent, I acquired my second Champaign Gold 5000D shown below. These reels are very rare and are key pieces for ones vintage collection.

Two very rare 5000D reels in Champaign Gold. The 4000D (shown below) and 5000D were identical reels specifically designed for the bass caster. The 4000D came in brown only and the 5000D came in green and a very few in CHAMPAIGN GOLD. The gold reels were made for one customer in the northern Midwest and did not have a box of there own. The box for the green 5000d was used with a small sticker on the side reading, GAMBLE SKOGMO 50TH ANNIVERSARY. These reels were designed with an innovative direct drive free spool drag system.

#1 reel foot is 741100. This reel is so very NEAR MINT but has a couple very small scratches on left plate and also has a couple light scratches on one arm of handle. The inside frame edges are nearly perfect except for a couple very light marks on upper left side. For sale at $925 including postage. Box not included.

#2 reel foot is 741100. This reel was recently found and is an outstanding example of this RARE MODEL. There isn’t a mark on the plates. There is one tiny bruise on the top right edge of frame and it is so small it is difficult to see. I have never seen a better example of this model. The chrome frame is excellent although the top of the foot is slightly dis-colored below the spool. I believe one has to classify this reel truly near mint. For Sale at $1050 including postage. Box not included.

4000D Boxed with Insert

This 4000D model is considered a rare reel by Simon and placed in the fourth grouping by Simon. This reel had about 10 production dates where the champaign gold reel had but one. This reel is new unused and in box with insert holding the reel. The box shown has some weakness in the end flaps. This box is much easier to find compared to the box for the gold reel that has the sticker on it. This reel and box is for sale including postage. $550

ABU LOVES SUNSET ORANGE

Looking left to right, Sunset Orange 1500C and 2500C are new reels just released by ABU in early 2008 for the Asian market.. These reels are designed like the old Classic design with flat sides and not equipped with Instant Anti Reverse. They are equipped with a 4.7:1 gear ratio. I have a few for SALE.

The Sunset 4500C has been out a few years and has been a real favorite with both collectors and fisherman.

New Collectors Need to Be Aware!!!

Collecting Ambassadeur reels has become a popular activitie and is a worldwide hobby. Knowledge about the reels you are collecting is so important. One has to be able to recognize "knock-offs" and they are on Ebay most any day. A collector needs to know what affect "replacement" parts on a reel have and the effect they have as to value. A replacement part on a reel sold as original can be critical and in many cases collectors will not even look at your reel.
